LIVERPOOL’S iconic Anfield stadium will not be ready for the start of the new season.

And it means some fans will have to miss out on the Reds’ first home game against Bournemouth.

Liverpool began work on their Anfield Road Stand in 2021.

The project will increase the stadium’s capacity by 7,000 seats to 61,000.

And Jurgen Klopp’s men hoped to play in front of the glitzy new stand on August 19 against Bournemouth.

However, the Reds have now confirmed that work on the extension is still ongoing.

It means 7,000 supporters will not be able to watch the first home game of the season.

But fans can take hope in Liverpool’s 2016 opening of their new Main Stand, which was opened in phases after the first three games of the campaign.

Liverpool managing director Andy Hughes said: “This has been a hugely ambitious and complex construction project right from the start.

“And I would like to thank everyone who has played a part.

“Unfortunately, the upper tier of the Anfield Road Stand is not quite ready for the Bournemouth game.

“The main contractor, Buckingham, will therefore work with Liverpool City Council’s licensing team to deliver a phased opening process.”

Liverpool’s first game of the new season is away at Chelsea.

Following the home clash with Bournemouth, they then travel to Newcastle before hosting Aston Villa.
