Incredible horse Quickthorn makes rivals ‘look like mugs’ with astonishing Goodwood Cup victory

INCREDIBLE horse Quickthorn made his rivals ‘look like mugs’ with his simply jaw-dropping Goodwood Cup win.

Tom Marquand hared off miles clear of rivals in the big Group 1 feature on day one of the Glorious festival.

At one point in the two mile contest he looked to be about 20 lengths clear and destined to fall back into the pack after running out of energy.

But the horse simply loves being on his own up front and he fended off all challenges to scoop the £283,500 prize at 16-1 odds.

Racing punters were stunned by the performance – which was a repeat of what Quickthorn did at York last year.

One said: “Tom Marquand has made them all look like massive mugs there on Quickthorn.”

Another wrote: “Take a bow @TomMarquand that was one of the best front-running rides I’ve ever seen on Quickthorn.”

A chuffed Marquand said: “He’s a warrior. He just loves bowling away. It’s an exceptional performance.

“There’s no masterplan on him, it’s simple what you need to do. Everybody knows what he’s going to do.”

However, the ITV experts were right to ask questions about the jockeys in behind and why they had let Quickthorn get so far ahead.

Especially when he has shown he can win doing just that before.

Meg Nicholls said: “Tom Marquand take a bow – he knows this horse really well and it was a beautiful ride.

“He was given a lead like this when he obliterated a field at York before.”

While former jockey Jason Weaver asked: “Did the others just give him too much of a lead?”

While one punter said the extreme front-running tactics made for a ‘f***ing joke of a race’.
