Luckily for Rydz, he was not affected by the insect and took his throw as normal.

But many fans watching live on Sky Sports noticed it – especially after the incident was replayed in slow motion.

One person took to X to write: “This Ally Pally Wasp action has made me laugh more than anything in years. What the super slo-mo was made for…”

Another joked: “It’s good to see the Ally Pally wasp is still alive and kicking.”

A third said: “The Ally Pally wasp, some things never change.”

While a fourth quipped: “The Ally Pally wasp seems to have found a home 😂.”

Wasps have plagued stars at Alexandra Palace in recent years, so much so that a running joke started.

Ross Smith was stung three times at last year’s competition during his match against Niels Zonneveld.

Luke Littler also appeared to be stung during his quarter-final match against Brendan Dolan.

Rydz went on to beat Owen 4-3 to book his spot in the World Darts Championship quarter-finals.

He will now face Michael van Gerwen or Jeffrey de Graaf in the last eight.
