That makes it the most-watched FA Cup match this season, surpassing Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Arsenal which was viewed by 7.6million fans on BBC One.

It also drew the biggest television audience of the year so far across all channels and the biggest audience for an FA Cup Quarter-final since 2018.

Presenter Mark Pougatch wrote on X: “Peak of 8.4 million of you watched the pulsating Manchester United-Liverpool Quarter Final. A brilliant game deserved that huge number.”

The Red Devils clinched a dramatic 4-3 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Scott McTominay broke the deadlock just 10 minutes into the match but two goals in quick succession from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah saw Liverpool take the lead on the verge of half-time.

Antony fired United level in the 87th minute, forcing the match to extra time when Marcus Rashford cancelled out a Harvey Elliot strike.

Amad Diallo then secured a last-gasp winner with just seconds left to play.

Following the match Man Utd were drawn to face Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley.

However, some fans were convinced that the draw was “fixed”.

The viewers watching on ITV had not been told beforehand which number related to which team and the casual vibe was a far cry away from most draws.

Teams were also drawn directly out of the velvet bag rather than first being placed in a pot, as is traditionally the case.

One fan said: “This is the most fixed FA Cup draw I’ve ever seen. So unprofessional.”

Another commented: “Draw for FA Cup is a fix! Didn’t say who had what number firstly.”

While a third added: “Since when have we ever had an FA Cup draw without it being announced who was each number beforehand?”

United’s local rivals Manchester City were drawn to face Chelsea in the other semi-final.
