JAMIE CARRAGHER has blasted the decision to award Manchester City a penalty in the 25th minute of their game against Chelsea.

A penalty was given after Marc Cucurella was judged to have pulled Erling Haaland‘s shirt as he looked to connect with a Bernardo Silva cross.

Jamie Carragher, who is on co-commentary for the match on Sky Sports disagreed with the decision by Anthony Taylor to award a penalty.

The former Liverpool defender immediately reacted: “That’s not right, that’s not right” after the decision was given.

He continued: “No, no, no. This isn’t right. The VAR has looked the end of the tussle. He needs to look at the start. This is very harsh.

“Haaland had a hold of him as well. I think that’s what gets him in front of him.”

Taylor immediately pointed to the spot, and showed a yellow card to Cucurella.

On the replay, it appeared as though Cucurella had grabbed hold of the arm of Haaland – even if the contact may not have been enough to floor the 6ft4 man.

There was a lengthy pause in play while VAR pored over whether to award the penalty or not.

The confusion was only heightened when VAR pulled things back to examine whether Reece James had handled the ball prior to Cucurella’s foul.

Haaland duly dispatched the penalty to net his 12th Premier League goal of the season.

It’s his 16th goal in all competitions.

The game is currently tied at 2-2 going into half time during a topsy-turvy first-half.

Six minutes of added time were added on to make up for the lengthy VAR break.
