He then had to ride over half the three-mile circuit without his irons.

However, he was able to get them back before eventually winning the race in dramatic fashion.

Stunned racing fans took to social media to react, with one person tweeting: “Joe Anderson gonna get ride of the week there at Plumpton on Transmission? Somehow stays on the horse, loses irons. Drifts to 210/1 in running and comes back to win with ease. Wow.”

Another wrote: “Well, January 7th and thats the ride of the year for 2024 wrapped up already. Incredible scenes from Joe Anderson aboard transmission in the 2.15 at Plumpton, I don’t even mind coming 2nd to that.”

While a third added: “That’s the greatest ride I’ve ever seen in horse racing.”

Speaking after the race, Anderson told Sky Sports Racing: “Thank god that’s over and done with. I lost my irons and I thought he was going down, so he did well to stand up.

“I kept going for one of my irons but it went over the other side of my saddle as I was trying to get it back.

“Every time I moved he started lighting up, but when I jumped the last with a circuit to go he settled away and was able to get it then. It’s a good job that he’s very good at jumping.

“It wasn’t actually that uncomfortable and he jumped so well that I barely needed to help him out.

“It worked out in the end and when I watch it back I’m sure it’ll make me look a bit better than I am!”
