Jockey Sean Bowen faces crucial scans on knee injury next week as big rival Harry Cobden closes the gap in title race

CROCKED jock Sean Bowen is hoping docs will give him the green light to return to the saddle next week.

The championship leader has been on the sidelines since Boxing Day after suffering knee ligament damage in a heavy fall at Aintree.

He looked set to win the Grade 1 Formby Hurdle on Gordon Elliott’s Farren Glory before the pair took a crashing tumble two out.

Bowen, 26, held a 30-winner advantage over Harry Cobden before getting injured, and his rival has now whittled the lead down to 20.

Paul Nicholls’ stable jockey Cobden had a winner at Plumpton on Monday and has a strong book of rides at both Newbury on Tuesday and Chepstow on Wednesday.

And he might have been a lot closer in the standings already had so much racing not been rained or frozen off since Christmas.

Bowen, who has 121 winners to his name this season, had originally hoped to return within days of his fall, but the injury turned out to be slightly more severe than expected.

He has been receiving specialist treatment at the Injured Jockeys’ Fund’s hub at Oaksey House in Lambourn.

And the BHA’s Dr Jerry Hill has booked him in for scans next week – and if they’re all clear he will be given the go ahead to resume riding.

Bowen said: “I’m heading to London next week to see a specialist for a scan, I’m not actually sure which day yet as Dr Hill is sorting it.

“I thought I had just banged up my knee a bit at first but it turned out to be a bit of ligament damage, though I don’t think it is serious.

“I should be able to get back quickly if the scans are all good. I’ve been in the gym and seeing physios are Oaksey House and I feel good.

“It’s nearly been a month now so I’m very eager to get back.”

The bookies reckon it is going to be a tight race over the next few months with both jockeys chasing a first ever title.

Sky Bet make Bowen the 4/6 favourite with Cobden just behind at 11/10.
