GOLD Cup-winning jockey Paddy Brennan apologised to owners after he was banned for finishing third in a bizarre end to a race.

Brennan was said by Sun Racing’s Matt Chapman to have ‘annoyance in his eyes’ after losing second place on Young Buster.

The 11-4 favourite was never catching 7-1 winner Egbert up the run-in at Doncaster on Saturday.

But he looked for all the world to be line to capture the £6,075 runner-up prize.

That was until Brennan, in the words of the stewards, ‘appeared to drop his hands and stop riding’.

As the Fergal O’Brien-trained Young Buster slowed towards the post, 5-1 Snipe came absolutely bounding home under 3lb claimer Tristan Durrell.

Snipe finished a head in front of Young Buster, costing connections of the latter more than £3,000 in prize money.

Chapman reported from the course that Brennan looked furious as he made his way into the stewards’ room after the race.

And the multiple Grade 1-winning jockey was hit with a ten-day ban for ‘failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing’.

Brennan has since revealed that he said sorry to Young Buster’s owners, The Good Stock Syndicate, for costing them thousands.

He told the Racing Post: “I’ve got to apologise to the owners, the trainer and the punters.

“I wasn’t entirely happy with the horse. I reported that and the stewards said ‘why didn’t you get off him?’

“We’re in the process of an appeal so we’ll see what happens.”

Punters watching the race were of the opinion Brennan had suffered a howler, with one calling his closing effort a ‘stinker’.

While Chapman said on Sky Sports Racing: “That is a mugging. The jockey will be furious.

“For me this is black and white – if Paddy Brennan is honest he has to say ‘sorry, I should have finished second, I’ve been done’.

“He’s just walked past and you could see the annoyance in his eyes.”
