England international Henderson quickly called time on his controversial stint in the Middle East in January as he signed for Ajax.

The Dutch giants had ensured a miserable campaign and were flirting with relegation until transforming their fortunes over recent months, coinciding with the midfielder’s arrival.

The experienced ace played the full game as Ajax came from behind to rescue a 2-2 draw at home to Fortuna Sittard on Sunday, thanks to Brian Bobbey’s 88th-minute equaliser.

That left them six-points adrift of the Eredivisie top four but Henderson was left completely stunned by an intense line of questioning as he spoke to ESPN afterwards.

The interviewer bluntly asked him: “Was this the worst game of the season since you are here and maybe your worst performance?”

Henderson awkwardly laughed by sternly replying: “No because we didn’t lose as you’ve just asked us before the camera came on.”

The host then tried to double-down by saying: “You said we didn’t lose but…”

However, Henderson was in no mood to play as he quickly cut him off and replied: “So it’s always worse when you lose the game, yeah.”

That would have been enough for some, but the man on the mic attempted to move the conversation on by talking about Ajax using “too many square balls”.

Henderson stated: “When you don’t perform well, you keep going right until the end and we didn’t lose the game.”

Finally, the cringeworthy exchange was ended by Henderson delivering a seven-word response when asked if he would call it “a poor performance”.

He bluntly said: “You can call it what you want”, after being asked whether he can label it a ‘poor performance.”

The clip of Henderson, who will discover today if he has been picked in Gareth Southgate’s upcoming England squad, soon went viral.

And supporters appeared to love everything about his prickly replies, as one post on X read: “You have to give props to Henderson for standing on business. He didn’t shy away at all.”

Another wrote: “I love the way he handled the response tho, top professional.”

While a third said: “Tbh he handled that very well, the reporter was very direct and not planning on holding back.”
