He is yet to feature for the Red Devils after being given additional time off following the Euros, but he has hinted at where he might play under Erik ten Hag.

Zirkzee, 23, has operated as a striker for most of his career but the Dutchman warned fans he is not a natural number nine.

He told The Mirror: “I occasionally drop down to midfield. I don’t do that for myself but to help the team.

“I am what I call a false striker. Not a No 9, not a No 10. I am a 9.5! That’s my game.

“Maybe I’m a little different than others. But being different is good, right?”

Zirkzee will likely start in United’s first game of the season against Fulham with Rasmus Hojlund set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury against Arsenal.

United face rivals Manchester City in the Community Shield first and will also miss new signing Lenny Yoro.

The defender has undergone surgery on a metatarsal injury that will keep him out for three months.

Yoro, 18, suffered the damage in only his second appearance for his new club – a 2-1 friendly defeat to Arsenal in Los Angeles.

United could make another signing to replace the Frenchman with Matthijs de Ligt an option.
