What happened to Keira Walsh?

Keira Walsh was stretchered off during a Group D match between England and Denmark at Sydney Football Stadium on July 28.

Just ten minutes before half-time, the midfielder appeared to get her foot stuck in the turf after sticking her right leg out to intercept the ball.

Walsh was seen folding over in pain and waving for treatment.

A number of Keira’s team-mates, including Lucy Bronze and Georgia Stanway, rushed over to support her but she was seen ushering them away.

A visibly emotional Keira appeared to tell the physio: “I’ve done my knee,” before burying her head in her arm.

Heartbreakingly, Keira could be heard saying”it’s over, it’s over” as she was stretchered off.

The star was given a huge cheer from the crowd at Sydney Football Stadium as she was carried off.

While being transported off the field, Keira covered her face with her shirt.

After being stretchered off, Keira was pictured on crutches.

The extent of her injury was not yet known at the time of writing but Lioness manager Wiegman did say at a post-match press conference that she is “concerned”.

She said: “Of course I’m concerned because she couldn’t walk off the pitch.

“But we don’t know yet, so we can’t take any assumptions. Let’s just wait until we really have a diagnosis and then we can tell you.”

According to The Independent, Wiegman also said that midfielder Walsh is “likely” to have a scan in the coming days.

Former England striker Ellen White, who retired in August 2022, is one of BBC Sport’s presenters at the 2023 World Cup.

Speaking about Keira’s injury after the match against Denmark, she said: “I’m devastated for her to be honest. She’s been one of the best if not the best player for England.

“It looks bad. She knows straight away it’s not good. Who is going to replace her? We need balance, someone needs to be in that No6 to sit and hold.”

Fara Williams added: “The more you see it, the worse it looks.

“We are not medics but you know it’s serious. Much of our good stuff in the Euros and friendlies ahead of the World Cup comes through her.

“We need some discipline in that midfield.”

England are scheduled to play their next match against China on Tuesday, August 1.

The team’s captain Leah Williamson and forward Beth Mead have both been unable to compete in the 2023 tournament due to ACL injuries.

Midfielder Fran Kirby has also missed out due to a knee problem.
