4 days ago 20

President Donald Trump said late Sunday that he is directing his government to reopen and expand Alcatraz, the notorious former prison on a California island off San Francisco that has been closed for more than 60 years.

In a post on his Truth Social site Sunday evening, Trump wrote that he is “directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ, to house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders.”

The prison was closed in 1963 due to crumbling infrastructure and the high costs of repairing and supplying the island facility, because everything from fuel to food had to be brought by boat.

Other news we’re following today:

  • Trump says he doesn’t know if he backs due process: In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” that aired Sunday, Trump said he did not know whether U.S. citizens and noncitizens alike deserve the guarantee of due process rights laid out in the Constitution.
  • Mexico rejects Trump’s proposal to host U.S. troops: Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum had rejected his proposal to send U.S. troops to Mexico to help thwart the illegal drug trade because she is fearful of the country’s powerful cartels. “She’s so afraid of the cartels she can’t walk,” Trump said.
  • Trump threatens a 100% tariff on foreign-made films: In a post Sunday night on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he has authorized the Department of Commerce and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative to slap a 100% tariff “on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands” because “The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death.” It wasn’t immediately clear how any such tariff on international productions could be implemented.
