Liverpool vs Southampton preview

Liverpool return to Premier League action on Saturday following their thoroughly epic encounter with Paris Saint-Germain.

It was the very definition of a smash and grab.

Arne Slot’s side were pummelled for 87 minutes before Harvey Elliott netted with his first touch and Liverpool’s second shot of the night.

Luis Enrique’s side – who boasted 70% possession, had 27 shots and recorded an xG of 1.82 – were shell shocked as the Merseysiders escaped the French capital with a 1-0 victory in their Champions League last-16 first leg.

Liverpool will host the second leg next Tuesday.

But in the meantime they will be relieved to see rock-bottom Southampton travelling to Anfield.

The Reds still boast a 13-point lead at the top of the Premier League table having played a game more than Arsenal, who entertain Manchester United on Sunday.

And there’s little reason to think Liverpool won’t be 16 points clear by the end of play on Saturday.

Liverpool won 3-2 against Southampton in the reverse fixture, and have won 11 of their last 13 Premier League games against Ivan Juric’s relegation-bound side.

Slot’s men are unbeaten in each of their last 24 Premier League games (W17 D7) and have netted at least twice in 25 of their league games this season, at least 10 more than any other side!

There are 58 points between Liverpool (67) and Southampton (9) coming into this match, which is the biggest points difference between two sides coming into a Premier League meeting since July 2020.

As for Southampton, they are winless in their last nine Premier League away games against Liverpool – losing their last six visits to Anfield by an aggregate score of 19-1.

They are the side to have created the fewest big chances, scored the fewest goals and have the highest xGC (expected goals conceded) against a side with the exact opposite for all those metrics.

Liverpool’s exploits midweek might be their only hope of keeping things respectable on Saturday.

Dominik Szoboszlai has flourished of late. The Hungarian international, 24, has been directly involved in six goals in his last 11 appearances in the Premier League with four goals and two assists.

No Liverpool player – not even Mohamed Salah – has registered more attempts at goal (10), with Szoboszlai boasting the second-highest xA (expected assists) and non-penalty xG (expected goals) over the last four matches.

If he starts, or even gets 30 minutes we would expect him to to secure an attacking return at Evens with William Hill.

Cody time

Cody Gakpo narrowly missed out on the PSG clash with a slight knock but should return to feature against Southampton this weekend. And if he features, there’s more than a chance he gets himself on the scoresheet.

The Netherlands international, 25, has netted 16 goals in 38 appearances for Liverpool this season with 12 of those scored at Anfield – in fact only Mohamed Salah can better his league tally at home.

Again, he only trails Salah in key metrics at home such as xG, attempts on goal and big chances with a better shots per minute of 27.
