Littler took control early, racing into a 4-0 lead in front of a partisan crowd in the capital.

The Nuke looked composed throughout and held his nerve to hold off an MVG fightback, eventually securing a 7-3 win.

After hitting his winning double, a fired-up Littler raced towards his family and friends in the crowd.

Now the youngest winner in the tournament’s history, Littler began to shed tears of joy as the magnitude of his win sunk in.

He told Sky: “I can’t believe it. Honestly. I can’t believe it.

“We both played so well. I knew I needed to get off to a great start, and that’s what I did.

“Michael was right behind me the whole game.

“Everyone dreams of lifting this trophy. So it really is a dream come true.”

Littler threw 12 180s in the contest, averaging 102.73 to MVG’s 100.69.

But it was his ruthless display on the doubles that saw him leave the Dutchman in the dirt.

Littler hit 25 out of 45 on the doubles, an impressive 55 per cent.

He continued: “I was practising backstage on the tops and 10s (D10).
