Centre-back Teden Mengi, who rose through the Manchester United youth ranks, hit a 72nd-minute opener.

But the lead lasted less than two minutes as Michael Olise curled in a mouth-watering equaliser in a chaotic second half.

It was a nightmare afternoon for the Eagles who had a 68-minute opener by Osdonne Edouard chalked off for handball after suffering a double injury blow just after half-time.

Eberechi Eze limped off and Cheick Doucoure was stretchered off, with both said to be in tears.

Neither side could hit a barn door until 22 minutes in when Thomas Kaminski produced jaw-dropping back-to-back saves.

The first was to tip away a rasping Michael Olise shot before Jeffrey Schlupp drilled the rebound at Kaminski who blocked it with an outstretched foot.

Amari’i Bell had a go up the other end with a long-range drive but Sam Johnstone easily mopped up the damage.

Palace were sweating when Alfie Doughty whipped in a menacing cross in front of goal but Chiedozie Ogbene was unable to make the crucial touch.

Eze’s twinkle toes earned him a free-kick on the edge of the box before the break but he fired it straight to Kaminski.

Palace were hit with the double injury blow straight after the restart as Eze was hurt in a tangle with Gabriel Osho at the end of the first half, and was replaced by Jordan Ayew

Doucoure was then stretched off with his head in his hands after slipping and appearing to injure his ankle after attempting to pass the ball.

Will Hughs entered the fray as Roy Hodgson watched on glumly – but he was left jumping for joy when Olise’s floating cross found Osdonne Edouard to slot home.

VAR was the party pooper though as a brief check ruled it out as the ball had stuck Edouard’s hand in the build-up much to the glee of the Kenilworth Road massive.

The warning shot fired a rocket up the Hatters’ backsides and Mengi pounced onto a loose ball after a flick-on from a Doughty corner before poking in on 72 minutes.

You could hear a pin drop two minutes laters as Olise cut inside and curled in a mouth-watering finish into the far corner and cheekily put his fingers to his lips to silence the boisterous Hatters fans.

Brown wrapped things up as he slotted in from close-range a peach of a curling pass from Ogbene.
