MANCHESTER CITY have given Newcastle the green light to sign Kalvin Phillips on a loan transfer in the new year, a report claims.

But Eddie Howe‘s side face a dilemma as the club are keen on the England international but do not have the funds for a permanent deal.

Newcastle have struggled in recent weeks from their knockout of Europe to their Boxing Day 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

With multiple injuries and Sandro Tonali suspended Howe’s side are keen to sign Phillips.

And according to talkSPORT, last year’s Treble winners Man City are willing to let the midfielder go.

Phillips has played just 89 league minutes this term and the report claims the Citizens are inviting offers for the 28-year-old.

But his wages are said to be around £150K per week and with Financial Fair Play being the only thing in the Magpies way Phillips may have to agree to a pay cut.

If the midfielder does agree to the transfer then he could be starting for Newcastle as early as January.

Gareth Southgate has previously warned the former Leeds ace that his place in England’s squad for Euro 2024 is at risk if he fails to secure regular first-team football.

Phillips has been unable to play consistently at City since his £45million arrival from Leeds United last year.

Juventus had opened talks with Pep Guardiola‘s side over a move for the England international in the January transfer window.

But talkSPORT’s new report may mean Phillips’s move to Italy could be off the cards to remain in the Premier League.

Rising up the youth ranks at Leeds Phillips made his senior debut for the Championship side in 2015 and secured over 200 league appearances at the club.

During his eight seasons in the senior squad, he assisted the Whites to Premier League promotion under Marcelo Bielsa in 2020.

Meanwhile, since being at Man City Phillips has only played in 16 league games.
