Pep Guardiola had been praying for good news following the latest setback to his squad.

But it appears Haaland is in line for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after City released a worrying injury update.

The Premier League champs told fans that Haaland will see an ankle specialist after undergoing initial tests today.

And they hinted that he could miss almost all of the rest of the season, including next month’s FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest, by only making reference to a potential return for the Club World Cup.

City’s statement read: “Manchester City FC can confirm that Erling Haaland has suffered an injury to his left ankle.

“The Norwegian striker sustained the injury during Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final victory away at AFC Bournemouth.

“Erling underwent initial tests in Manchester on Monday morning and will now seek specialist consultation to confirm the full extent of the injury.

“Assessment remains ongoing to ascertain a full prognosis. The expectation is that Erling will be fit in time to play a further part in the remainder of this season, including this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup.
