MANCHESTER UNITED fans were left stunned after Andre Onana took up a new position against Real Madrid.

The goalkeeper is known for his ability to play out from the back but he took that to extreme lengths in the pre-season friendly.

With United trailing after Jude Bellingham’s early opener, Onana had the freedom to roam from his box.

He took up a position between the two centre-backs which allowed the Red Devils to stretch play and take up wide positions.

Onana then picked out his team-mates on the wing with precise passing, leaving fans impressed.

The summer signing reminded some supporters of a past United cult hero with his play – Fabian Barthez.

One fan said: “He’s a bit mad. I’m getting Barthez flashbacks.”

Another added: “What is this? Is that Fabien Barthez? I can’t remember the last time I saw a goalie, always that far up & playing sweeper and centre-back/goalkeeper role to push team up & take advantage. Amazing.

“Going to be a very weird but interesting season with how well play and set up from back going forward.”

A third wrote: “It’s such a breath of fresh air.”

And another commented: “He did it very well last night.”

However not all fans were in agreement with some claiming his expansive style could lead to goals being conceded.

In fact, for Bellingham‘s goal Onana quickly rushed out to close down the England midfielder, allowing him to chip the ball over the keeper into the back of the net.
