The Red Devils were dumped out of the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford as Newcastle romped to a 3-0 win.

A heavily-changed side failed to deliver the goods just days after a 3-0 home defeat to Man City in the Premier League.

And the pressure is building on Erik ten Hag after another Halloween horror show.

Summer signing Mount was given the chance to prove his worth after a slow start to life at United.

The England midfielder had only made eight appearances prior to last night’s start after battling injury.

But despite playing all 90 minutes, he was unable to make an impact in the middle of the park.

However, United fans were quick to praise Mount at the final whistle.

As teammates trudged off to the dressing room, the ex-Chelsea man was the only Red Devil to stay and applaud distraught home supporters in the stands.

Mount looked visibly upset over the result as he clapped fans still in attendance.

The crowd appreciated his efforts, with many responding with a round of applause for Mount.

But rival fans couldn’t help laughing over what they interpreted as a merely symbolic gesture.

One said: “£60m, that was money well spent.”

Another declared: “I’d do a few laps of the stadium if I were on the money he was on.”

One noted: “Take it from Chelsea fans, this is all he is good at.”

Another added: “Clapping merchants.”
