Man Utd in major coup as they snatch rivals’ sought-after chief to take CEO job as Sir Jim Ratcliffe continues overhaul

MANCHESTER UNITED are set to appoint Omar Berrada as their new CEO after poaching the executive from rivals Manchester City.

The Red Devils have been seeking a chief executive after Richard Arnold left prior to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 25 per cent takeover.

And now they have landed on Berrada – who is widely recognised as a key figure in Man City‘s success both on and off the field as chief football operations officer at City Football Group.

The Athletic received a statement from the Treble winners confirming the news of Berrada’s departure.

It read: “Manchester City Football Club can confirm that Omar Berrada has resigned from his role as chief football operations officer at City Football Group.

“The club understands his decision to look for a new challenge and he leaves with our thanks and best wishes.”

Both Ratcliffe and the Glazers made a joint decision to go with Berrada after Ineos had initially identified and pursued him.

Man Utd were prioritising a CEO with a proven track record in football that can also effectively take charge of the business side of the club.

Berrada has shown he is capable of excelling in those areas at both Man City and Barcelona.

As well as heading up football and business operations, Berrada will also sit on the board of directors.

During his time at Man City, he worked closely with director of football Txiki Begiristain on matters such as transfers and contracts.

He played a major role in persuading Erling Haaland to come to the Etihad.

Berrada’s departure from Man City ends a 13-year stint at the club after he joined from Barcelona in 2011.

During his eight years with the Catalan giants, he was a senior media business development manager and head of sponsorship.

Berrada will take over from interim CEO Patrick Stewart – who has been in the role since Arnold’s exit.

Sir Dave Brailsford, Ratcliffe’s right-hand man, is also set to play a major role at Man Utd moving forward.
