And the Clarets, following relegation from the Premier League, would be willing to sell the 26-year-old holding midfielder.

Despite dropping into the Championship, Burnley will refuse to sell him for cheap.

Sun Sport understands that United would be prepared to pay £20M for the player signed for £12M from Sheffield United a year ago.

Burnley, now bossed by Scott Parker after Vincent Kompany took over at Bayern Munich, would hold out for £10M more.

They are under no pressure to sell given that they have a £100M parachute payment to rely on.

Berge became a stand-out performer despite his side’s vain bid to stay up having also spent two seasons in the Prem at Bramall Lane.

Berge, big mates with star international team mates Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard, has become a surprise alternative target for the Red Devils.

The ambitious Scandinavian is understood to be excited about the possibility of playing at the Theatre of Dreams on a contract worth £100,000 a week.

But that dream move will only happen if United get somewhere close to hitting Burnley’s asking price.

Berge could now be considered an experienced Prem player after making 66 appearances across three separate seasons for Sheffield United and Burnley.

The midfielder has managed three goals and four assists in that time.

On the international stage, Berge has represented Norway 46 times – captaining his country on two occasions.
