Man Utd legend Gary Neville slams Arsenal and Liverpool for setting ‘nonsense’ precedent

GARY NEVILLE has come under fire after blasting Liverpool and Arsenal for setting a “nonsense” precedent with their complaints to the PGMOL.

The Manchester United legend claims it’s “embarrassing” that Premier League clubs are now writing to reffing chiefs over controversial decisions.

Earlier in January Arsenal raised the question of winger Bukayo Saka being regularly fouled with the refereeing organisationGetty

But many fans on social media hit back – even suggesting there should be MORE such  “accountability” for “mistakes” from officials.

Liverpool criticised the Professional Game Match Officials Limited last October after Luis Diaz had a goal wrongly erased in a 2-1 loss at Spurs.

The PGMOL replied by admitting that VAR officials Darren England and Dan Cook failed to act over the costly decision.

And this month Arsenal wrote to the refereeing organisation to raise concerns over how often Bukayo Saka was being fouled.

Then this weekend Nottingham Forest contacted the PGMOL to query why comeback hero Ivan Toney was allowed to move the ball for his free-kick wonder goal in Brentford’s 3-2 win.

Neville, 48, posted: “Clubs writing to the PGMOL is embarrassing! Liverpool and Arsenal started it and set the precedent of this nonsense.”

But a large majority of fans who responded to Nev disagreed with the eight-time Prem winner,

One said: “If PGMOL did their jobs properly no one absolutely no one would even have to talk about them let alone write to them.”

Another accused Neville of “putting up with such a low level of officiating – zero consistency”.

And a third wrote: “Why shouldn’t they (referees) have to answer for their mistakes? Their organisation is a direct result of the mess playing out.”

And a fourth argued: “The standard of officiating in this league is not good enough. Why should we accept mediocrity?”

Similar views included: “How is it embarrassing? If clubs are robbed they have absolutely every right to write to PGMOL to question their decisions.”

But a few fans had sympathy for Nev’s rant – some suggesting that complaining to the PGMOL was pointless.

One said: “It’s weird isn’t it. It won’t achieve anything.”
