MARK HUGHES has revealed that he interviewed for the Liverpool job after Roy Hodgson was sacked.

The former Blackburn and Southampton boss was a star for the Reds’ rivals Manchester United during his playing career.

Hughes, 60, won the Premier League twice with the Red Devils as well as the FA Cup three times.

He became a face of the Premier League’s management circle having multiple jobs including Fulham, QPR and Stoke City.

The Welshman also managed United’s cross-city rivals Manchester City between 2008 and 2009.

However, he could have got himself into more trouble with United fans had he got the Liverpool job.

Hughes has revealed that he sat down with the club over the vacant position after Hodgson was axed in 2011.

He told Sam Allardyce’s No Tippy Tappy Football podcast: “I once had an interview for the Liverpool job.

“I don’t think that’s well-documented, but I didn’t get it so that doesn’t really count does it.

“I think Kenny [Dalglish] decided he was going to be a manager again.

“Perhaps the choice of candidates wasn’t great and that’s why I didn’t get any closer.

“I had a sit down with people at Liverpool, there you go.

“I think that would’ve been more of a shock than me getting the Man City job.”

Hughes had already succeeded the former England manager at Fulham, but missed out on the Anfield gig to club legend Kenny Dalglish.

Hughes’ most recent managerial job was in League Two with Bradford City.

He was sacked in October after a poor start to the season.
