Holden is on a three-man shortlist for the role.

Former Grimsby manager Paul Hurst is one name on the list.

Co-owner Ryan Giggs could be considered too.

Giggs, 50, joined other members of the Class of 92 in investing into Salford in 2014.

The club enjoyed four promotions in five years following the initial purchase from Giggs, Gary and Phil Neville, Paul Scholes Nicky Butt and money man Peter Lim.

Inter Miami owner David Beckham then joined his former team-mates by buying a stake in 2019.

However, after making it to League Two, the group’s dream of guiding Salford into the Premier League is under threat.

Despite the ambitious owners making promotion their target every season, this year they find themselves staring down the barrel of relegation back to non-league football.

Salford have failed to win any of their last nine league games, with their last victory coming in October.

And their recent woes in the league saw them sack Neil Wood after a 5-1 defeat to Tranmere on Boxing Day.

Wood’s sacking means they are now searching for a fifth permanent manager since becoming an EFL club.

This was then followed up by a 3-0 loss at home to Grimsby yesterday, which has left them 21st in the table.
