MANCHESTER UNITED loan flop Wout Weghorst was booed by Burnley fans during their friendly against Genk.

The striker came on as a substitute in the 79th minute with the Clarets in search of an equaliser.

But his arrival was greeted with boos and X-rated chants from the travelling Burnley faithful.

Weghorst is not a popular figure at Turf Moor after he sought out a transfer following Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League last year.

Fans booed his every touch against Genk and others on social media felt that treatment was well deserved.

One supporter said: “Well done fans. Pay your money and pay your respect or disrespect. The guy could have apologised but instead he thinks he can walk back in as though he did nothing wrong.”

Another added: “Should never have pulled on the shirt again. Having him back in claret and blue is equally embarrassing.”

And a third wrote: “Only came back because he’s not good enough. Should never have been allowed to wear the shirt again.”

However some Burnley fans were not happy with the treatment Weghorst received and slammed the behaviour.

One commented: “Just not acceptable, you don’t boo your own players!!!”

Another added: “Those are our ‘supporters’. Absolutely beggars belief.”

Weghorst, 30, left Burnley last summer on loan to Besiktas where he scored nine goals in 18 games.

But his spell in Turkey was cut short due to an approach from Manchester United, where he spent the second half of the season.

The Dutchman helped United win the Carabao Cup and ended his Old Trafford spell with two goals in 31 games.
