DONNY VAN DE BEEK upstaged his Manchester United team-mates as he netted a brilliant goal against Lyon.

The Dutch midfielder fired in the go-ahead goal against the French side less than two minutes after coming onto the pitch as the Red Devils continued their pre-season preparations.

Erik ten Hag will be happy to have seen his players get important minutes into their legs ahead of the new season.

The Dutch manager managed to field over 20 different players in the match against Lyon at Murrayfield in Edinburgh.

Summer signing Mason Mount also managed to get some more minutes under his belt as he started the game.

Donny van de Beek made the breakthrough early in the second half with a volley after being set up by Daniel Gore.

Jonny Evans also made his second debut for United, 17 years after his first debut for the club in 2006.

Here are how the United players rated during the clash against Lyon.

Matěj Kovar – 6

Showed some neat passing from the back as United looked to improve their possession play however he is likely to be stuck behind expected United signing Andre Onana next season.

Álvaro Fernandez – 5

Fernandez showed plenty of pace as he was involved in a lot of actions. Was lucky not to have given away a penalty for a clumsy challenge.

Raphael Varane – 7

Made some important stops as he captained the team in the first half and was able to help relieve pressure off of the young Kovar in goal.

Lisandro Martinez – 6

Solid at the back did not put a lot wrong, but did look rustier than Varane.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6

Plenty of energy from the defender and was a useful option for Varane as he looked to progress the ball up the pitch.

Mason Mount – 6

Played some nice passes to get United up the field but had a poor effort from a free-kick and fired another attempt well over.

Hannibal Mejbri – 5

A quiet outing for the midfielder as the game largely passed him by but did make one good pass to set up a counterattack however did make a rash tackle on the stroke of halftime.

Kobbie Mainoo – 6

Saw plenty of the ball and was able to win a lot of his duals on the pitch. Mainoo made his first-team debut last season and could be set for more minutes at Old Trafford if he continues his progression.

Amad Diallo – 6

Forced a really good save from Lisandro Lopes when the scores were level and looked dangerous when on the ball.

Antony – 6

Had a good chance to score in the first half but was denied by the goalkeeper.

Jadon Sancho – 7

Looked like United’s best attacker while he was on the pitch as he was improved from his performance against Leeds.

Substitutions

Marc Jurado – 6

The young defender, who made 23 appearances in the PL2 last season almost grabbed a goal shortly after Van de Beek but was beaten to the ball by the defender.

Jonny Evans – 7

Showed his experience and won the ball at some key moments.

Will Fish – 6

An aggressive showing from the 20-year-old who was often challenging for the ball high up the pitch.

Brandon Williams – 6

Fairly quiet outing for the defender but did get himself about a bit.

Donny van de Beek – 8

Scored within seconds of the start of the second half with a brilliant volleyed finish.

Daniel Gore – 7

The 18-year-old midfielder showed quality on the ball and was the one to set up Van der Beek’s goal with a great cross.

Fred – 6

Not as effective as Van der Beek but still had a positive influence on the game.

Isak Hansen-Aarøen – 6

Looked dangerous playing on the left side of the attack, and almost grabbed a goal if not for a good save from Lyon’s substitute stopper.

Last season he netted three goals in the PL2 and would have backed himself to have beat the goalkeeper.

Omari Nathan Forson – 5

The exciting 18-year-old winger was not able to impact the game as he would have liked as it passed him by as he saw little of the ball.

Joe Hugill – 6

Looked very bright up top, with his speed and energy causing plenty of problems for the Lyon defence.
