The Manchester United midfielder was a target for Italian giants Lazio.

Chairman Claudio Lotito held strong interest in the Brazilian, who is deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

But when he proposed the player, manager Maurizio Sarri pulled the plug – simply because he didn’t want Fred.

And Sarri has previous in shutting down other options on his boss’ wishlist – and instead suggests the players he wants to bring in.

Lotito said: “I was prepared to open talks with Manchester United and bid for Fred.

“But Maurizio Sarri told me no — he doesn’t want Fred.

“He did the same with Giovani Lo Celso.

“Sarri wants Piotr Zielinski and Samuele Ricci.”

And Sarri’s veto means Galatasaray can wrap up their deal for Fred unchallenged.
