MASON MOUNT has been tipped for a stunning career switch after being described as “perfect” for a role by Alan Shearer.

Appearing on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer, 53, was joined by Gary Lineker and Micah Richards.

The trio had been speaking about the goal scored by Kobbie Mainoo against Liverpool before having a joke at Richards, 35, for asking questions, to which he replied he was after Lineker’s job.

This prompted Lineker, 63, to say he would love to see Richards read an autocue.

Richards then admitted: “Reading an autocue frightens the life out of me… there is zero chance I will ever attempt to be a presenter.”

The conversation appeared to get Newcastle icon Shearer to recall a memory about his and Lineker’s time at the Russia World Cup in 2018.

He recalled how they had three young England stars in the studio with them in Moscow and asked Lineker whether he remembered who they were.

Match of the Day host Lineker then said: “Mason Mount was the one, he was quite good wasn’t he.”

Shearer said: “So we had Mount, [Ryan] Sessegnon and Phil Foden I think it was.

“Mount I think was brilliant. Just like straight through, not one error, not one slip up, he was perfect.”

Lineker then quipped: “He’s young enough not to be affecting me,” prompting chuckles from Shearer and Richards.

Mount did not make the final cut of Gareth Southgate‘s England team then but was called up in the Euro 2020 squad and 2022 World Cup with 36 international caps and five goals under hit belt.

However, an injury ravaged season following a transfer to Manchester United from Chelsea last summer has seen his spot in Southgate’s 23-man squad for this summer thrown into doubt, particularly given the rise of Mainoo.

Mount came off the bench against Brentford last week to score his first goal for Man Utd, though the Red Devils were not able to hold onto the lead and drew 1-1.

The 25-year-old has played just 16 games in all competitions for Erik ten Hag‘s side this season, with only six of these being starts.

But it seems regardless of how his football career unfolds he will have a future in broadcast journalism following in the footsteps of the likes of Lineker and Alex Scott.
