BENFICA wonderkid Joao Neves has a huge release clause in his current contract – and it could prevent Manchester United from signing him.

The Red Devils have held an interest in the 19-year-old for several months.

And they have been monitoring him closely since the start of the season by sending scouts to watch him in action for Benfica.

Reports in Portugal claim that Man Utd are now “fully convinced” about the midfielder’s ability.

However, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Benfica are not willing to sell him.

The Eagles have no intention to even discuss the possibility of a transfer.

That means the only way Man Utd will be able to sign Neves in January is by triggering his release clause – which is currently £105million.

United captain Bruno Fernandes spoke highly of his Portugal team-mate while on international duty last week.

He told Sport TV: “I would love to have him at United.

“But it’s Joao choice… He has top quality.

“He’s a great player but it depends on the coach’s ideas.

“He will have a great future, in United or somewhere else.”

Neves began training with the Benfica first team in January following the departure of Enzo Fernandez and has since made 38 senior appearances across all competitions.

The midfielder made his international debut for Portugal alongside Fernandes last month in a Euro 2024 qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
