Man Utd icon Keane, 52, recently criticised Rashford for his demeanour after scoring against Tottenham.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “We need to see more, he’s showed it before, he’s got the quality.

“Why does he seem to be upset with everybody? He’s got to go and enjoy it he’s playing for Man United.”

Now Rashford has responded to those comments with a playful Instagram post.

The England international, who scored 30 goals last season, shared a picture of him smiling in Man Utd training.

And he added the cheeky caption: “‘So, he does smile.’ Have a great day, my people! 😃❤

After Keane’s remarks, Rashford clarified that his celebration against Spurs – which saw him move his hand up and down in the shape of a mouth – was aimed at those who had been critical of his form.

And manager Erik ten Hag urged both Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund to continue improving after the pair hit the back of the net in the 2-2 draw with Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Rashford has struggled to find his form so far this season

He said: “I hope they keep going with this progress.

“You see they are coming up with routines – that is what you need.

“You need it everywhere but especially in the front line, where there are tight areas and quick decisions have to be made.

“In a split second you need the right decisions, so you need that intuition.”

Man Utd, who were dumped out of the Champions League in the group stage, are languishing in eight place in the Premier League table.

Goals have been hard to come by for Ten Hag’s men as they have netted just 24 in 21 matches.

That is the joint-fourth fewest in the division behind only Sheffield United, Burnley and Crystal Palace.

Man Utd’s final chance of silverware this season is in the FA Cup and they are preparing to face League Two side Newport in the fourth round on Sunday.
