Marcus Rashford ‘behaving like an idiot’ & finding football a ‘chore’ as Roy Keane says: Forget about watches and cars

ROY KEANE has slammed Marcus Rashford for “behaving like an idiot” and insisted football currently looks like a “chore” for him.

The Manchester United forward, 26, landed himself in hot water over the weekend after flying to Belfast for a night out, before he called in sick for training the following morning.

He was left out of Erik ten Hag’s squad for their trip to Newport in the FA Cup as the manager insisted it was an “internal matter”.

And after Rashford was fined £650,000, the Man Utd head coach insisted the saga was “closed” during his press conference on Wednesday.

Man Utd legend Gary Neville has claimed individuals within the squad may be talking to the media in a bid to increase talk around Rashford’s behaviour.

But fellow Red Devils icon Keane, 52, is just as concerned by his on-pitch demeanour as his off-field antics.

The Irishman first commented about Rashford looking unhappy earlier this month, before the Man Utd man hit back with a cheekily pointed social media post.

But that has not deterred Keane from reiterating his view.

Speaking on Stick to Football, he said: “He’s 26 – we’ve all been there and made daft mistakes. I don’t think his attitude is one of not caring about the game, but his behaviour is that of an idiot.

“He’s making a few mistakes on the back of each other. He’s high-profile now, we see people out there on their phones, wanting to ring in and get players in trouble. He’s giving people that opportunity to go after him.”

He then went on to add: “We talk about him [Marcus Rashford], he’s a young lad, lots of pressure and he’s local, but it doesn’t look like he’s enjoying his football anymore.

“It goes hand in hand, what is happening off the pitch and on it. Football looks like it’s a chore to him, and it shouldn’t be.

“There’s pressure on everybody there, but he’s a big player for Manchester United. He’s shown before that he can produce. 

“The cars, the watches, all that is great, but don’t forget what comes first – your football.

“Good luck with all that other stuff, but if that is becoming more important than your football, then you’re in trouble.”

Some have defended Rashford, with former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin telling a story of how he personally snuck off to France for a gig without telling the gaffer.

Rashford has contributed four goals and six assists in 26 games this season, well down on his 30 goals and 11 assists in the 2022/23 campaign.

And Man Utd are struggling as a team with just one win in their last six Premier League games.

Ten Hag‘s men are languishing in ninth place, 11 points adrift of the top four.

They travel to Wolves on Thursday, before games against West Ham, Aston Villa and Luton.
