Miami Open tennis match suspended after medical emergency in crowd in worrying scenes

A Miami Open match was stopped for 12 minutes due to a medical emergency in the crowd.

Argentine Karen Khachanov, who had taken the first set 6-1 against compatriot Francisco Cerundolo, was level at 5-5 in the second when the incident took place.

According to journalist Danny Miche, the match was stopped when “someone broke down in the stands”.

It is also understood rain had just begun to fall on the court at the time of the medical emergency.

Play resumed after around 12 minutes as Cerundolo went on to take the second set 7-5 and force a decider.

Two-time Grand Slam semi-finalist Khachanov lost three straight games after the stoppage, but recovered to hold his serve at the start of the third set.

It comes after fans potentially watched Andy Murray’s final singles match at the Miami Open on Sunday.

The Scot, 36, who won the event in 2009 and 2013, lost 7-5 5-7 6-7 (6) to Czech Republic’s Tomas Machac in a marathon clash that lasted three hours and 25 minutes.

Murray, who has battled injury issues for a number of years, hit out at a journalist back in January amid suggestions he was “tarnishing his legacy” by carrying on.

The tennis legend said: “Tarnishing my legacy? Do me a favour.

“I’m in a terrible moment right now I’ll give you that. Most people would quit and give up in my situation right now.

“But I’m not most people and my mind works differently.

“I won’t quit. I will keep fighting and working to produce the performances I know I’m capable of.”
