JAY BOTHROYD has opened up over his tempestuous relationship with Mick McCarthy at Wolves.

Bothroyd became McCarthy’s first signing at Molineux after the tactician took charge in 2006.

The striker scored 13 goals in 60 games for Wolves.

But he only lasted two seasons before being sold to Cardiff in 2008 following a one-month loan at Stoke.

During his time in the Midlands, Bothroyd slowly went from being a regular starter to a fringe bench warmer.

And the 41-year-old has now hit out at his treatment under McCarthy.

Bothroyd claims he was almost forced out of the club for a drop-down move to Shrewsbury.

He adds that he was made to train by himself after being frozen out of the first-team squad.

But Bothroyd reckons his record post-Wolves reflects badly on McCarthy’s managerial judgement.

After leaving Molineux, he went on to become a big player for Cardiff under Dave Jones.

It was during his time in Wales that Bothroyd won his one and only England cap, despite playing in the Championship.

And he ended up having another shot at the Premier League with a move to QPR before seeing out his career in Japan.

Bothroyd told the Central Club: “You have Mick McCarthy on one hand trying to sell me to Shrewsbury and s**t like that.

“And taking my squad number off me and making me get changed, making me train by myself.

“Dave Jones gave me an opportunity, he lets me play football the way I think football should play.

“Three years later I’m playing for England. That shows the quality of a manager to me because you look like an a******e.

“How can I not be good enough for Wolves in the Championship? You’re trying to sell me to Shrewsbury, three years later I’m playing for England.”

As for McCarthy, he remained at Wolves until February 2012.

He went on to manage Ipswich, the Republic of Ireland and Cardiff.

And his last job came at Blackpool, where he was sacked in April.
