Newcastle vs Liverpool preview
Things couldn’t be going much better for Arne Slot and his Liverpool side as they make the 120-mile trip to St James’ Park this week.
The Dutchman, 46, has won 18 of his 20 competitive matches since replacing Jurgen Klopp, scoring 47 goals and conceding just 12 with a bumper 11 clean sheets to boot.
His side sit top of the Premier League table by a full nine points having comfortably beaten rivals Manchester City on Sunday to extend their seven-match winning run in all competitions.
They are now odds-on favourites with bookmakers to clinch the Premier League title, and it’s not too difficult to see why with Pep Guardiola’s defending champions in the doldrums.
When Liverpool streaked away to their only Premier League title in 2019-20, they had 37 points from 12 wins and a draw at this same stage, just three more than they have currently.
And they might just fancy reaching the 37-point mark on Wednesday when they tackle an out-of-sorts Newcastle.
Eddie Howe’s side suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to struggling West Ham on their last outing at St James’ Park, before conceding a stoppage-time equaliser against Crystal Palace over the weekend.
Newcastle, who sit 11th in the division, have produced just TWO shots on target in their last two matches, which is the lowest of any side in the division.
They could also be without talisman Alexander Isak, who was substituted inside the first 25 minutes during the draw at Selhurst Park.

Newcastle vs Liverpool preview betting tips and predictions
Win to Nil
Given Newcastle’s struggles in front of goal and Liverpool’s excellent defensive record – I can see the visitors winning to nil at St James’ Park on Wednesday.
As mentioned, Newcastle have produced just two efforts on target in their last two matches, and those were against struggling West Ham and Crystal Palace, who rank fifth and eighth for expected goals conceded (xGC) this season.
The possible absence of Alexander Isak won’t help with that against a Liverpool side who boast the best defensive record in the division.
Slot’s side have conceded the fewest goals (8), registered the most clean sheets (7), beat both Manchester City and Real Madrid to nil and have the best away record in the league.

Cody time
It’s actually been Cody time for a while now. The Dutchman, 25, has scored six goals in his last seven appearances for Liverpool, including strikes against Manchester City and Real Madrid in his last two outings.
In fact, over the last six Premier League matches only Mohamed Salah can better Gakpo’s 13 attempts on goal. He’s also got a good record against the Magpies having netted two in three winning appearances.
