But Sky Sports understand Eddie Howe’s side have won the race to secure his services as the Magpies prepare for the return of Champions League football.

A fee has not yet been confirmed, but Saints previously rejected a £30m bid from Newcastle.

The South Coast side bought him from Chelsea two years ago for just £4m.
