“On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer,” the Simpson family announced on his X account.

“He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace.”

Simpson didn’t make many public appearances in the later stage of his life, with his last photos being taken in Las Vegas.

The former Buffalo Bills running back looked frail in his final appearance, walking with a cane.

He looked inconspicuous, covering up with a ballcap and a Las Vegas Golden Knights jacket.

Simpson was seen being helped out of the passenger seat of his car by his assistant before taking to the streets of Las Vegas.

He was seen earlier in January using a cane to walk, and had an apparent limp before his cancer diagnosis.

Simpson was seen as far back as October of 2023 in videos where he looked frail and unhealthy, but he continued to maintain that he was doing alright

The former NFL MVP was diagnosed with cancer in February, and had previously denied rumors of being in hospice care on X.

“Hospice?! Hospice?! You talking about Hospice?” he wrote.

“No, I’m not in any hospice. I don’t know who put that out there, but whoever put that out there, I guess, it’s like the Donald said, ‘You can’t trust the media.'”

OJ Simpson's football career

OJ Simpson played for 10 years in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers from 1969 to 1979.

After starring in college for the University of Southern California in 1967 and 1968, he was drafted No 1 overall by the Bills in 1969.

Simpson spent nine of his 11 seasons in western New York and was named NFL MVP in 1973.

He was also a five-time Pro Bowler and led the league in rushing four times.

The former running back had two seasons with the 49ers before retiring in 1979.

Simpson scored 75 touchdowns during his career – 61 rushing and 14 receiving.

Simpson was a decorated athlete, playing 11 seasons in the NFL after being drafted in 1969.

He quickly became a star in the league, winning MVP in 1973.

Simpson was never able to capture a Super Bowl though, and retired from the league with six Pro Bowl selections, five All-Pro nods, and one MVP league.

He is perhaps more famously known for the Trial of the Century, where he was arrested for the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.

Simpson was acquitted from the crimes, but the trial has forever tarnished his image and accolades on the football field.
