ORGANISERS have cancelled an Olympics practice event just 48 hours before the start.

The city council, Paris 2024 organising committee and World Aquatics have taken action ahead of the 10km open water swim.

Organisers have an alternative location if the Seine is not deemed safe for Thursday’s race[/caption]

Swimmers will not be able to hold their contact sessions two days before the event, with the women’s race on Thursday in the Seine.

The men’s race follows on Friday, however, the event itself is not currently in jeopardy.

In a statement, organisers confirmed the “familiarisation” session for swimmers in the Seine has been cancelled.

It follows the delays made to the men’s and women’s triathlon events during the first week of the Games.

The events were at risk of being turned into a duathlon due to the unhealthy state of the water and with no alternative available.

Similar concerns were also raised ahead of Monday’s mixed relay triathlon after the practice session was scrapped.

Team GB went on to claim bronze with their quartet of Alex Yee, Georgia Taylor-Brown, Sam Dickinson and Beth Potter.

It followed Yee’s gold in the men’s triathlon, with Potter also taking bronze in the women’s event.

However, in the case of the open water swim, organisers do have a plan B thanks to the rowing regatta coming to and end.

If the Seine is not deemed safe for Thursday and Friday’s races, the events will be held at Vaires-sur-Marne.
