FANS have slammed Dominican Republic captain Edison Azcona for his antics against Spain at the Paris Olympics.

The winger, 20, was shown a straight red card during the first half in Bordeaux on Saturday.

Completely inexcusable. Azcona is the captain of this team. He just notched an assist on DR’s first ever goal at the Olympics a few minutes prior to this. Lost his nerve in the worst possible of moments. 🇩🇴 #OlympicGames pic.twitter.com/16hhCInoS7

Dominican Republic had been level at 1-1 as half-time approached before Azcona’s moment of madness.

After being fouled by Spain’s Pau Cubarsi, he kicked out while on the floor.

Azcona’s foot went straight into Cubarsi’s balls, leaving the Barcelona defender rolling around in agony.

A scuffle ensued between players from both teams before the referee sent off Azcona.

Reacting to the incident on social media, one fan wrote: “Gold medal for stupidity.”

Another added: “What a stupid thing to do.”

A third supporter also commented: “I love how he acts surprised at the red card. Idiot.”

Azcona had appeared perplexed by the referee’s decision as his team-mates protested against the sending off.

However, he will now miss his side’s final group match against Uzbekistan on Tuesday.

His red card also proved costly for Dominican Republic in the second half.

Goals from Alex Baena and Miguel Gutierrez following the interval saw Spain clinch a 2-1 victory.

Azcona, who plays his club football for Las Vegas Lights, has won four senior international caps.

He also appeared in the opening clash with Egypt, which ended in a goalless draw.
