The rugby legend, currently in charge of the Irish national team, twice served as assistant on previous tours.

Farrell first played No2 to Warren Gatland for the 2013 visit to Australia, which the Lions won 2-1.

He then accompanied Gatland for the 2017 tour of New Zealand, which ended in a tie.

And Farrell will now be hoping for success Down Under after transforming Ireland’s fortunes.

Calling his appointment an “honour and a privilege”, Farrell said: “There is a wealth of talent across Britain and Ireland.

“I am looking forward to building a team that can deliver the ultimate goal of success in Australia.

“The British and Irish Lions fan base is really special, uniting supporters from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and beyond.

“Mobilising that sea of red by creating a team that our fans can connect with and be proud of will be a key priority for me and will be crucial to our success.”

Farrell knows a thing or two about winning, having led Ireland to the top of the world rankings after four years in charge.

He’s also done the Grand Slam in the Six Nations, and even led them to a historic test series victory in New Zealand.

Lions fans will certainly be hoping for glory after losing the 2021 tour of South Africa 2-1.

Just nine Irish players made the cut for Gatland’s squad that year.

But based on current form, they would make up the backbone of the 2025 group to Aus.

Farrell’s son Owen could be in with a shout too if he’s still playing next year.

The 32-year-old is still starring at the highest level with Saracens and England.

And it may be his ability to play as a fly-half or centre that gets him on the plane.
