PAUL SCHOLES has given his take on why Manchester United have been forced to play a different style under Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag had previously said Man Utd would “never” play the same way his Ajax team did.

Less than ideal results have followed that declaration with the Red Devils often being seen to play a more counter-attacking style than one that dominates possession.

And ahead of Man Utd’s crunch Champions League clash with Galatasaray, Scholes explained he believes the composition of the Red Devils squad was the root cause to this style.

Speaking on TNT Sports he said: “United have to play on the counter attack with the type of team they’ve got.

“They can’t control games so they have to rely on their forward players.”

Ten Hag caused a storm among the Red Devils fan base after dropping Kobbie Mainoo to the bench for the Galatasaray clash.

The youngster was replaced by Sofyan Amrabat, with Antony, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Rasmus Hojlund also recalled to the team after the 3-0 win over Everton.

The team selection Scholes said: “He (Mainoo) had a great game against Everton on Sunday in a hostile atmosphere which this is gonna be as well.

“But I can half understand why because he hasn’t played a lot of football it’s possibly his first game back on Sunday [with] a couple of reserve team games.

“So you can understand why he has gone for a little bit more experience in Amrabat and he’ll have Mainoo on the bench, he’s not scared to go to the bench.

“Would have liked to see Martial play if I’m honest. He’s clinical.”

He continued: “Antony has not been great, he’s not played a lot, I’m not sure where he”ll be at fitness wise with the international break too.

“I would’ve liked to see martial come into that front three with Garnacho and Hojlund.”

The game in Istanbul went ahead despite torrential rain earlier in the day which saw the Uefa Youth League clash between the two sides heavily impacted on a waterlogged pitch.

The match ended in a 3-3 draw with both sides with Man Utd throwing away a 3-1 lead.
