Walker has hosted the BBC programme over the past 12 years and his final show will air on May 22 – the final weekend of the Premier League season.

He said: “This is going to be my last season presenting Football Focus.

“It has been an amazing 12 years and I can honestly say I have loved every single second of it.

“I am so proud of the job we’ve done, the changes we’ve made and issues we’ve looked at a time when the football landscape has changed immeasurably.

“But, having said all that, after 12 years it’s time for someone else to take the reins.

“I’d like to say thank you to the amazing team at Focus who put so much into the show each week and thank you to the audience for tuning in every Saturday.”

500/1 chance Morgan, who is a free agent having left ITV’s Good Morning Britain, was quick to throw his hat in the ring

In response to Walker’s announcement, he wrote: “I start Saturday.”

But Piers is the last of a 12-strong betting field that includes leading contender Jermaine Jenas, who is available at 2/1.

The BBC pundit and former Tottenham midfielder is narrowly ahead of 3/1 second-favourite Alex Scott.

Kelly Somers and Mark Chapman are priced at 7/2 and 4/1 respectively with former Sky Sports presenter Simon Thomas offered at 5/1.

Peter Crouch and Laura Woods are locked together at 12s while Soccer AM’s Jimmy Bullard is priced at 10/1.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “Jermaine Jenas seems the perfect fit for Football Focus and the odds suggest he could soon be stepping into Dan Walker’s boots.

“Elsewhere, 500/1 says Walker’s arch nemesis, Piers Morgan, gets the gig.”
