Popular stable lad Reg Todd – who became a TV sensation with first Ascot winner in 62 years last summer – dies aged 78

REG TODD, the 78-year-old stable lad who captured racing fans hearts last summer, has died.

He devoted his entire life to the racing industry, working in various yards for over 60 years, and he rose to fame after leading up his first ever Royal Ascot winner in 2022.

He led up Dark Shift, won won the Royal Hunt Cup at the Royal meeting, and was the centre of attention after the race.

So popular was his win that he was awarded a World Pool ‘moment of the day’ prize of £1,000 and a bottle of champers.

Todd, who only recently celebrated his birthday, started his career in the racing industry in 1959 and has worked for the Hills family for over 30 years, initially with Barry and then with Charlie when he took over the licence in Lambourn in 2011.

He passed away on Tuesday surrounded by his family.

Charlie Hills broke the sad news on social media, saying: “We had the sad news that Reg Todd passed away peacefully yesterday surrounded by his family.

“It is hard to put into words just how much Reg did for the yard and the industry as a whole – he devoted his life to racing. We will miss you hugely.”

Racing fans and professionals paid tribute to popular Todd.

Trainer John Berry said: “Gosh, so sorry to hear that. A wonderful man. Always so friendly & enthusiastic.

“An absolute stalwart of the game. Condolences to Reg’s family, friends & colleagues.”

ITV presenter Luke Harvey said: “Very sad Reggie was a lovely man.”

And former champion jockey Paul Hanagan said: “A great man sadly missed.”
