Postecoglou admits he didn’t try to convince Harry Kane to stay at Tottenham as he reveals when he knew ace was gone

ANGE POSTECOGLOU knew Harry Kane was leaving the moment he took over as Spurs boss.

But he reckons the England captain will be back at Tottenham one day.

Kane, 30, arrived in Germany ion friday night by private jet for a medical ahead of  his £104million switch to Bayern Munich.

If the striker signs the five-year,  £415,000-a-week  deal and is registered before 3pm, he could  win his first ever trophy  TODAY if he makes the bench for Bayern’s German Supercup clash with RB Leipzig.

When Postecoglou was asked if he knew the striker would leave when he took the job on June 6, the Aussie chief replied: “Yeah, pretty much.

“It wasn’t part of the contract negotiations that I needed certain players to stay.

“You do due diligence when you take a job and hopefully I was well- researched enough to know what was going on in the background.

“When a player of Harry’s stature is going into the last year of his contract, you don’t need too much investigative research to know what’s going on.

“I knew going into it that this was the most likely outcome.”

Kane held a meeting with Postecoglou on July 12, the day the striker returned to Spurs’ pre-season training, in which he made his desire clear to leave in this window should a deal be agreed.

Postecoglou said: “After that initial conversation, it seemed like Harry had made up his mind that if the clubs could agree he was going to go.

“If not, he was happy to stay. It’s not like he was forcing it on me.
“He was very professional about it and I tried to treat him with the respect that someone of his standing deserved.”

After three failed bids, Bayern finally landed their man with an offer of an initial £86m plus £18m in add-ons that has broken their transfer record.

Postecoglou did not see the point trying to persuade him to stay.
He added: “Whatever I was going to say was going to be irrelevant to what he felt.

“I could give this grand vision but I’m sure he’s heard it all before.”
Kane leaves Spurs as their greatest goalscorer, having netted 280 goals from 435 appearances.

But Postecoglou, whose side visit  Brentford in their Prem opener tomorrow, is convinced Kane will return one day.

He added: “He’ll definitely be back at Tottenham one day in one capacity or another.

“When you have a career like he has at one football club, you’re never not part of it.”

Spurs will now step up their move for Nigerian striker Gift Orban, 21, from Belgian club Gent.
