Premier League should introduce mandatory age limit after Roy Hodgson health scare, claims Man Utd legend

DWIGHT YORKE has called for the Premier League to introduce a mandatory age limit on managers.

Hodgson, 76, was rushed to hospital after collapsing in training with Crystal Palace.

The former England manager has since agreed to step aside from his role as manager with Austrian Oliver Glasner being appointed as his successor.

Yorke, 52, feels that the episode should be taken as a warning and has suggested that there should be a “cut-off point” for managers when they reach a certain age.

Yorke told Instant Casino: “Roy Hodgson has been absolutely magnificent throughout his career and for what he has done in the game.

“From a personal point of view, young managers need to be given the chance.

“Roy needs to be respected for the work he has done, but there comes a time when these managers over 70 years old need to be moved on.

“As players we have to retire and referees have to retire so managers should also be able to retire.

“I just feel like there should be a mandate and a cut-off point when managers get to a certain age.

“I’m not saying these managers can’t be involved in football.

“Roy could be a director of football, but if you’re a football manager at 70 years old, there should be a mandate in place.”

The average age of Premier League managers is currently 49 years old.

Following Hodgson’s departure, West Ham boss David Moyes, 60, is now the oldest in the division.

There are six managers under the age of 45, with Burnley‘s Vincent Kompany, 37, the youngest of the lot.
