PSV vs Arsenal preview

Arsenal kick-start their Champions League knockout campaign against PSV Eindhoven this week.

And manager Mikel Arteta will be desperate for his side to bounce back from what’s been an extremely disappointing few weeks.

The Gunners have tamely dropped out of the Premier League title race following a defeat to West Ham United and a goalless draw at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground.

Successive winless games without scoring has seen Liverpool extend their advantage to an unassailable 13 points with some bookmakers having already paid out on Arne Slot’s side.

Having already exited the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, the Champions League is Arsenal’s only opportunity for silverware this season.

But seeing off PSV could be easier said than done.

The Gunners are still without several of their attacking stars including Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka. They were also eliminated by the Dutch side in the Last 16 back in 2006-07.

Recent history, however, is on their side having twice faced Peter Bosz’s PSV in the Champions League, beating them 4-0 at the Emirates and drawing 1-1 away in the 2023-24 group stage.

Arsenal have also only lost one of their last 14 games against Dutch sides in the Champions League – although they’re winless in their last four against PSV away from home.

As for PSV, they haven’t fared much better in recent weeks.

The Eredivisie champions lost twice in the space of four days against Go Ahead Eagles, one in the Eredivisie and the other a loss in the KNVB Cup semi-final.

The Dutch side haven’t suffered three successive defeats in all competitions in 11 years.

The Eindhoven outfit now have just one win on their record from their last six games in all competitions, and worryingly have registered one clean sheet in their last 14 outings.

Arsenal certainly aren’t full of goals at the moment, but if they do score a couple – as we predict – then captain Martin Odegaard is more than likely to be involved.

The 26-year-old has scored three and provided six assists in 28 appearances this season – despite missing 13 games through injury and illness.

No Arsenal player can better his Big Chances created over the last four Premier League matches (2), while his chances created tally stands at seven in his last 348 minutes of league action.

No player in the Arsenal squad has more touches in the final third, and none can match his xA of 1.22 – perhaps helped by the fact he’s taking set-pieces in the absence of Bukayo Saka. He also scored in this fixture last season.

Carded

Arsenal’s Mikel Merino may well find himself in the referee’s notebook on Tuesday.

The Spanish midfielder, now filling in as a central striker for the Gunners, has collected 90 cards in his 372-match career and three in 13 Champions League appearances.

He’s conceded eight fouls in his last four league appearances for Arsenal, which is higher than any player in the squad – no mean feat given he’s played around 100 minutes less.
