Coming in at 14/1 odds the 10-year-old gelding and jockey Rachael Blackmore will have won backers plenty of cash.

And despite the races usually seeing plenty of giddy excitement and celebration, fans watching on noticed something particularly unusual about a group of race-goers who were celebrating the victory.

A section of fans by the fences were sent into frenzy at the finish line while seemingly holding hurling sticks.

The sticks – which are used for the traditional Irish sport hurling – were being held by a number of the spectators who jumped for joy and embraced each other as Ain’t That A Shame crossed the finish line.

Fans watching the racing from home couldn’t believe what they were seeing and took to social media to share their reaction.

One wrote: “I mean why, just why?”

While another added: “Imagine trying to get in a UK course with a bottle of water let alone a hurl!”

Although some fans joked that it’s a common sight in Ireland, with one writing: “You’re watching racing in Kilkenny, there’s bound to be hurls!”
