PUNTERS were in hysterics as millionaire property magnate jockey David Maxwell nearly fell off the back of his horse when is accelerated to the finish line.

Maxwell’s £200,000 purchase El Cairos had miles left in the tank when reaching the finish at Newbury, and flew away from his rivals.

The unexpected burst of speed from the Gary and Josh Moore-trained horse appeared to take the property tycoon by surprise.

Punters took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to rave about the 45-year-old’s ride.

One commented: “He looks like he’s riding a motorbike with no license.”

Another added: “He’s nearly sat on the horse’s tail by the finish line.”

One said: “Punters are just thankful he never fell off when he went to use the whip.”

Another added: “He’s not still trying to ride is he?”

Another said: “on a runaway train with no brakes at Newbury is a scary sight to behold for on-course ambulance crew!”

One said: “For a second there I thought Paddy Brennan had made a comeback.”

Paddy Brennan is the now-retired jockey who rode Cue Card to miss out on the Gold Cup after the jock fell off at the third last fence.

Like Maxwell, his riding style was considered unorthodox by punters.

Maxwell, who owns the horses he rides, has long come under fire for his riding, which some punters believe is found wanting in the style department.

But the millionaire has long been involved in racing. He was brought up in a yard in Northern Ireland where is father was a successful small trainer and stud owner.

He is no stranger to owning a good horse these days either, and El Cairos certainly looks one to watch.

One said: “Looks like a rocket.”

Another added: “Must be decent to win with John Wayne on it.”
