A RACING punter smashed bookies for more than £23,000 after landing a rarely seen ‘Goliath’ bet.

The massive punt is made up of 247 bets in all – and the bettor almost landed the full house but for one horse finishing second.

Nurse Susan, left under Harry Cobden, was one of the winning legs of the huge ‘Goliath’ bet[/caption]

JPR One got the bet off to a great start with his 6-1 victory in the Lightning Novices’ Chase at Lingfield on Sunday.

Jane Williams’ Saint Segal made a slight mistake at the last when he was chasing down winner First Flow in the next race at the Surrey track.

He was unable to make up the ground, though, and went down as a 5-2 place – the only losing leg in the monster bet.

From there this was simply no stopping the punter as they reeled off an amazing six winners in a row.

Falco Blitz kicked off the astonishing sequence with a 12-1 success in Thurles’ 2.10.

While 15 minutes later Nurse Susan landed the gamble of the weekend at Lingfield.

Backed at 100-30, the Dan Skelton-trained mare was smashed into 6-4 before winning by a neck from Ramo.

Willie Mullins’ Albert Bartlett fav High Class Hero won comfortably at short odds of 4-11 at Thurles.

Before it was back over to Lingfield for L’Homme Presse to enhance his Gold Cup hopes by defying a 391-day absence in landing the Fleur De Lys Chase at 5-6.

What is a ‘Goliath’ bet?

A ‘Goliath’ bet is eight selections made up of:

28 Doubles
56 Trebles
70 Four-Folds
56 Five-Folds
28 Six-Folds
8 Seven-Folds
1 8-fold

Movethechains landed another National for Gary Moore by winning the 3.35 at Lingfield.

His well-backed ten-year-old was always moving well in the Surrey National and made it two in two months for Moore after Nassalam routed the field in the Welsh version on December 27.

That left just Paul Nicholls’ Inthewaterside to complete the monster payout.

Despite not being well backed, the unexposed six-year-old was a convincing winner of the closing Winter Million Novices’ Handicap Hurdle.

With a whopping seven winners from eight bets, the punter won £23,316.92 in all.

Their 9p each-way Goliath wager totalled a stake of £44.46.

Not bad for an afternoon’s work.

And they were just the latest in a growing line of punters to wallop the bookies in 2024.

One pocketed £18,000 in 30 mins after an ‘unbelievable’ sequence of events.

While another scooped £47,000 despite one of their selections losing.
