A GROUP of horse racing punters thought they had achieved the ‘Holy Grail’ of betting and won an ‘astronomical’ amount – only to be denied in agonising circumstances.
Don’t feel too sorry for them though because they still stung bookies for a monster £250,000 after five of their six bets came in.
One winning punter showed their betslip – which equated to roughly an £18,000 payoutm from a £60 stake[/caption]Punters reported how a tipster known as Pusty sent his picks to 30 followers for the action at Belmont Park racecourse in Perth, Australia.
He advised backing all six horses that jockey Madi Derrick was riding on the day in a heinz, which is a multiple bet consisting of 57 separate bets.
There were 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 four-folds, six five-folds and the ‘Holy Grail’ – the clean sweep of all six.
One punter who followed the tips posted their winning betslip online, showing a roughly £18,000 payout from an approximately £60 stake.
But it could have been way, way more had Derrick, who won on five of her six rides, not lost the first.
Unfortunately she was beaten a head on Royal Toronado, with Cool Memory just prevailing at the post.
Pusty said it would have been ‘the end of me’ if the horse had managed to get up because it would have meant an £888,000 collect at the end.
It wasn’t to be but the tipster said he still pocketed a tidy sum – up to £100,000 – after the remaining five horses came in.
He told Punters: “I won’t tell you how much I won but it was between £50,000 and £100,000.
“I obviously thought Madi had a pretty good book of rides but was realistically hoping for three winners.
“I’m 63 and have been punting for a long time, and one of the things I’ve always done is follow jockeys.
“One win can bring another, and another. Like any sport, momentum is huge.
“Jockeys get a run on, it happens regularly – it’s just about finding that day that it happens, that’s the hard part.
“We didn’t win it all but we still took about £250,000 in total off the bookies.
“I did the sums and my payout was going to be around £888,000 if she won all six races.
“Still, I like my red wine so I celebrated with a couple of bottles of Virgin Hills, toasting Madi Derrick of course.”
Bookies around the world have taken a pasting from shrewd customers in recent weeks.
Three British punters had a Christmas to remember after stinging William Hill for £54,000 with an ‘astonishing’ series of bets.
While just last month another bettor scooped £23,000 despite backing a loser.
