RAPHAEL VARANE is set for a free transfer – as Gary Neville hopes Manchester United ditch stars to show they no longer “tolerate” failure.

The Red Devils have declined to trigger an extension to Varane‘s contract, meaning he can talk to foreign clubs in January and depart next summer.

Gary Neville says Varane and Lindelof ‘aren’t bad players by any stretch’ but it’s time for his old club Man Utd to ‘start afresh’[/caption]

And United legend Neville would be “worried” if another centre-back, Victor Lindelof, was allowed to stay.

But it’s understood the Red Devils HAVE already opted to hand the Swede an extra year on his deal – keeping him until 2025.

In contrast, the Mail say United have made up their mind to let Varane go.

The Frenchman, 30, has been beset by injuries but has also fallen out of favour with Old Trafford boss Erik ten Hag this season.

Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans are now regularly being chosen ahead of him.

And ex-England right-back Neville posted on X: “If United are looking to renew Lindelof and Varane (on reduced terms) I’m worried.

“We have to start afresh as much as possible.

“Whilst these 2 aren’t bad players by any stretch, a message must be sent to everyone inside and outside of the club that it’s not going to tolerate the levels over the last few years.”
